They're pure fluff, written within very, very broad parameters, which changes to developing rules likely wouldn't invalidate.
That said, I have no idea whether or not the world-building implied in the vignettes would be considered (auto)canon, or if it's being jettisoned.

The rules tie-ins/significant world building would probably relate to any introduced factions and/or specific characters. That seems to have changed over the years of development, but who knows?
