Default editing custom equipment?

Is there a way to save custom edited equipment to the equipment database to be used with future characters, with out directly editing the data file?
Right now the only way I have found to save equipment is to have a junk character that I just copy equipment to/from ...

You could make a new gdf file with the equipment and load it at the bottom of your other gdf files.

Save the newly created item (this will make a new file). Copy the content of that file in your custom gdf file which you will load.

Select the piece of equipment: Edit -> Full Edit Window -> Save to Data File

I found that, & tried it.. but can not load the file back into the system to use later..
When I try to open the file I get an error saying it is a character from 2nd edition..

Try opening the gdf file with a text editor. Search for the piece of equipment that matches most closely to what you want. Copy it to a new custom gdf file and edit the values to your liking.

Your custom gdf file should start with:
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=3
Program=4.0.423

And put your copied equipment under:
***
[EQUIPMENT]
***

Under GCA4 - Tools - Options - Data Sets - Change
Add the custom file to the bottom of the list.

If you're trying to load the custom data file using File > Load, that's not going to work, as GCA will only load characters that way. Instead, you use the Data Sets tab in Options, found from the Options link on the Tools menu, or the Options button on the toolbar.

The Data Sets tab shows your current data set (probably default.gds) and the data files it contains. You can click the Change & Load Files button to add new files to the current data set, and immediately load them for use.

Edit: Lord Azagthoth's post is also correct, if you have hand edited the file information, you'll need to ensure that it complies as he said.
