On the subject of maintenance, complex systems meant to be running constantly are often redundant; one part can be de-energized and LOTO (lock out tag out, safely isolated) while the other part remains running/operational. Allows continual travel, motion or production while maintaining duties are performed*.

Source: my work in semiconductor manufacturing environment running 24/7 on the machines containing boiling acid...

Or, in the old days, you just oiled the thing while it was in use, and tried not to lose appendages in the process.

Well some of the rules would require that maintenance to occur during times when it shouldn't, like an engine under thrust and can't occur at other times.
