Indeed, but that's what I would consider memorising a map, for the function of navigating the area.

Note that I don't think you'd completely memorise every detail of the map. If you're driving through an area you might ignore details irrelevant to your purpose, such as side roads and elevations, unless they happen to be useful as landmarks. But I'm not sure what purpose doing so would achieve.

That's fairly obviously not 'without a map', or so I assumed.

That's what I thought too, but as far as I know, it's standard to have a map so the point seems kind of academic.
