GURPS 5E?
With everything going on about the debacle from wizards of the Coast / Hasbro, have you thought about creating a 5e? There are a lot of people out there I think that would love to see GURPS have a renaissance!
Me especially if it came with conversion info. I might even know people who would want to play test it for you. 😁 |

Re: GURPS 5E?
5E is not going to happen in the near future. Its been talked about from time to time so here is the rehash.
The desire would be to go beyond PDF to something more like a computer ap. Trouble is that costs a lot of money to devlop. The line editor would have to put off work on his writing and editing to get it done, so likely no new content for 2 years. IF all the freelancers stuck to low crunch product that could be edited by others we could still see new content. However those editors are only part time with GURPS so thier other projects would suffer from delays. So its a very expensive project, beyond the current means.

Re: GURPS 5E?
A GURPS 5E would end up requiring a bunch of sourcebooks to be updated.
I think an "edition change" is handled better by books of alternate rules and tweaks (several of which already exist).

Re: GURPS 5E?
And, ultimately, to what end? What is broken about the system that requires a new edition, and what about any such changes would be acceptable to the broad player base?
If the answer is "Gosh, just to have something Shiny! and New!" and compel everyone to buy new stuff just for the sake of buying new stuff, then no.

A new edition that used something better than a PDF yet still worked on most machines might be enough for most of the base. Trouble is finding that holy grail format.

The Telepathic Powers have multiple different Ranges that appear to have been set almost randomly. Invisibility has that built-in "Doesn't affect Machines" Limitation that has to be removed at extra cost. Warp has built-in Limits for "Takes extra Time" and several other things that make it a better FTL drive than a personal Teleportation Power. I could go on but in general the form of any Power that appears as the default in the rules ought to be the simplest and most straight forward possible and it should be costed accordingly. If users want a more complex and/or peculiar version that can add Enhancements and Limitations. Reduce the number of possible Ranges a Power uses and make them more uniform and rational as well as other things.. 4e did a lot of useful clean up in basic mechanics. For example, I will _never_use the 3e Survival Rolls mechanic again. However, At the next level of detail things like the Advantage rules got cut and pasted without enough oversight.

Re: GURPS 5E?
There's a thread going on in Reddit covering this topic, and it has a link to a tiktok video asking the same question regarding gurps 5e.

Re: GURPS 5E?
There are a ton of changes that'd make the game more comfortable for me to actually use, but I doubt a lot of them would pass muster with GURPS fans generally.

Re: GURPS 5E?
Content-wise, 4e is excellent. There is no need to make a new edition.
What GURPS really needs is to update the games' form-factor to integrate with the capacities of 21st century information technology. |
