Re: Maces and axes
Given that 'halberd' in TFT means basically every pole arm in the medieval arsenal, I'm not too stressed about the idea that 'mace' covers a range of designs.

Re: Maces and axes
@larsdangly Exactly!
@JimmyPlenty Nope, the clear implication is that this length referred to throwing maces (based on the context of the surrounding text). You are splitting semantic hairs here. ;) The Kataphraktoi throwing maces could be two feet or more in length. And to be clear, I didn't have to do much digging at all! Also the thing about the Emperor. . . (Conjecture, your honor!) Thrown maces are RAW. If you want to create a new type of mace, have at it! We are in the house rules section after all. I just don't see anything particularly persuasive to support deviation from current RAW, historically or otherwise. |

Re: Maces and axes
I guess I am just not seeing the surrounding text supporting that the bigger ones were thrown at all.
That text (the one I seen anyway) comes from a reddit thread that doesn't have a source listed. Can you fill me in on it if you have the source please? Last edited by JimmyPlenty; 05-27-2020 at 09:07 PM. |

Re: Maces and axes
The maces used by the Kataphraktoi were thrown - universally agreed. The poster states that over time the length of the maces increased to over two feet and there is nothing stated that these maces were no longer thrown - Context. You seem to want the poster to say something like "the length of the maces increased and they were still thrown."
Tell you what, I've just put the question in to one of my old fencing students who is now a curator at the Wallace Collection in London. We'll see what he has to say on the matter. |

Re: Maces and axes
OK. That certainly is two feet at least.
I'm going to follow up with people in the Hârn Forums (Hârn is a medieval setting and the fans are usually rather rabid historians.) Last edited by JimmyPlenty; 05-27-2020 at 10:12 PM. |

Re: Maces and axes
Respectfully, "rabid historian" is quite different from "rabid historical enthusiast." One is a trained researcher and the other has read some books on the subject. ;)
It's funny that we rarely encounter amateur neuroscientists. . . |

True, but I'd thrown down with this lot.

Meaning what? You'd ignore trained professionals?

Re: Maces and axes
I mean a lot of them know their stuff. Although there are some are the armchair quarterbacks you talk of, there are some very knowledgeable people in that field there (not saying there isn't here of course).
Henry gave the proof that they can be thrown. Now I just want to find out more about it. When you get a chance, please send me over that source of what you found. The reddit thread only goes so long. Thanks man! Last edited by JimmyPlenty; 05-27-2020 at 11:11 PM. |
