I recall some steam/diesel punk stories use a literal system of tubes to transport written messages across office buildings (I understand this system is still used in some banks to send money to the front desk areas from the vault). In a culture that highlighted the information transfer value over the physical currency transfer value of this system,, it's only a matter of time and technological know-how before someone makes an electronic equivalent.
From there, it's quite obvious that this culture is going to call their internet a system of tubes. They'll probably call it the Tube for short, doubtless confusing OTL Londoners. |
