Default Scholar variant: Wise Man

I know this class is not in the DFRPG but would just like to present it. This class focuses more on understanding the mystical as opposed to the scholarly. He would understand how to disarm evil runes, release bound demons and spirits, understand religious magical items and temples as well as wizards lairs and magic items. He can not cast spells but he can sense their mystical energy and evaluate how to disarm them. He also understands how curses work and how to unravel them. He can sense the fairy realms as well as the Divine realms. He can interpret dreams and omens. In short he in an expert on the supernatural.

One power he might have would to be able to sense what spell an enemy wizard or cleric is using and warn the party. He may also be able to sense Elder Things and psionics too.

Pure scholars seem more like an NPC role than something a player would go for - even "support" classes like generally have *something* they can do that's more active than that. Disarm the evil runes and appraise the magical loot probably isn't going to cut it.

I'd probably start from the Cleric template - it's the archetypal support class and seems to have a lot of thematic overlap already. A cleric that doesn't bother with spells isn't a totally ridiculous character concept - though it's the non-trivial combat and mundane healing abilities that don't match the academic magical scholar concept that do the most to make it work.

Consider giving this guy a bunch of Resistances to supernatural stuff - Magic Resistance, Mind Shield, Resistant to Evil Powers, Invisible to Magical Senses, DR (magical attacks only) etc. - so even if he is squishy to mundane stuff, at least the supernatural threats won't kill him before he can use what marginal abilities he has against them.

Someone already came up with a Scholar conversion to DFRPG, in case you weren't aware of it. You could base your Wise Man concept off of it, potentially, and save some work.
