What would be new is the ease with which bulk goods would come to market. Look how quickly the USA develops in the Great Lakes region once the Erie Canal opens. In 1824, the year the canal opens, Chicago was a trading post in a swamp. In 1864, Chicago is one of the largest US cities. In 1904, Chicago is one of the largest cities on the Earth and a major world cultural center.

Don't underestimate the power of good transport.

The Erie Canal is also what allowed New York to surpass Boston as the premiere center of the U.S. economy.

Until the canal, Boston and New York were about equal, in terms of trade and finance. Once the canal was done, New York became the First City of the United States, and a center of Western Civilization (along with London and Paris).

Chicago became the Second City (one of its nicknames, actually), Boston fell to third, and then Boston was overtaken by Los Angeles.

Let us not forget that Philadelphia Pa. was the largest city in America in 1776.

Try this idea, Centrum works to back Pitt in two key things in 1763. First, they back Pitt's struggle to retain the Prussian alliance including getting George III to marry the Duke of Brunswick's daughter and maintaining the subsidies paid to Prussia. Secondly, they back the complete exclusion of France from the Newfoundland fisheries. This exclusion strikes at the French Navy, because the French monarchy was dependent on the Newfoundland fishing fleets as the means to train the sailors of their navy.

These two moves would fully prevent any chance of French aid to the United States of America in the American Revolutionary war. Homeline, to save this echo, must somehow revive the French Navy and break the Anglo-Prussian Alliance!

Try this idea, Ancient Rome tried to build a Rhine/Danube canal. They planned to connect this to the Rhone and the other major French/Gaulish rivers. If this had worked, the economic benefits might have kept the Western Empire alive for several centuries. A healthy Rome verus the Arab conquests would make a great campaign. Especially if you throw in bits and pieces of magic (not too much) from both the Arabian Nights and the Alexandrine Romances.

Interesting. When did they try in OTL, and why did they fail?

Possibly true, my point was that they had no intention of settling people there.

I don't remember when it happened, but the failure wasn't by much. They simply seem to have failed to endure long enough to get the job done. Possibly it was a matter of the project being a long way from Rome and not bringing prestige because most people didn't understand the benefits.

It was more an issue of paying for the protection of the populace from Native American tribes. And also controlling people so far from the coast.

I finished Three Victories and a Defeat. I found that there was a minor European war, that could have become major, The War of Bavarian Succession. Given this war would be in Adam Weishaupt's backyard, what a place to set a campaign. Note: If the War of Bavarian Succession had become major, France would have had to drop all aid to the American colonists. Britain would have scored a major naval victory and it's very likely that both Spain and France would have had to surrender large amounts of colonial territory.

Centrum wants this war, Homeline doesn't, but what do the illuminati want?
