Default Signature Gear Losses

Really quick sig gear question. If you've got a signature weapon and you parry a much heavier weapon, can it break? Does your choice in risking it fall under "lost due to your own choices" or does sig gear give you unbreakable weapons, or do you effectively get a 'free' replacement in the future?

I'd let it crack. But remember that Narsil was reforged, and so was Notung.

I run Signature Gear two ways. You have a special but not unique item (my pearl handed, golden plated desert eagle) or you have a item that is not unique or special but you always have (I always carry a fine longsword).

In the case of a special item if it gets broken; its lost until you can repair it or replace it (or you get to spend those cp on something else).

In the case of the regular item if it get broken; you lose it. But will always find another one like it shortly thereafter. The small village has one fine longsword and the owner gives it to you as a reward or some such.

So yes, I'd let the heavy weapon break a signature weapon. But as a GM I won't go out of my way to destroy it.

In my games signature gear is fairly easy to damage or loose, but you can allways repair it or find it fairly easy if you try.

Things like:
You use your signature blaster pistol to try to parry a lightsaber -> it breaks in two, but a normal unmodified repair roll will fix it, though you may need some parts.
You are captured and gear taken away->other stuff might be on the other side of the huge spacestation, but your signature item is in the guard room by the cell.

Id go with the Swedish flavored Dr Kromm on this one.

I a PC of mine carried a bog standard fine broadsword for 5-8 yrs IRL spanning 10-12 yrs (GM and I moved a bit) and 50 odd yrs of the PCs life.
He passed on numerous chances to replace/upgrade (he had once asked "God" to pick him a "good" one. Having thought on it some once you have done that as a priest how do you justify trading it out?

When the "perks" came out I bought both Weapon Bond and Sig Gear for it (no cash value to me an amount of "plot protection").

Was using it in combat once and someone parried my attack, with a monofiliment garrote (no he doesnt know the terms but the effects...). The point and about 6 inches got lopped off.

He had been to "Hell" a couple of times, different ones, he had visited the cesspools of the world, he had nearly died a number of times.

He was only depressed/discouraged twice.

The Day they Broke Upuaut's (GOD) Sword.

and

The Day they shot his Dog (xbow).

But he kept the pieces. I was trying to figure out what ther #@%% I was going to do when one of the other PC's swiped the sword and took it to a Dwaven Master Sword Smith and had it reforged. GM said "you cant tell the difference."

Party Lost some cash (GM happy). I was bummed (in Cha/out Cha) for a couple o weeks. An Imaginative PC got a bonus CP (PC other than me happy).

Hell that should be the type of sword that outlives the PC. When he dies; a friend, a son, a lover will pick it up and carry it forward; or will tear the earth apart looking for the killer who stole it....

That's my feeling too, that the Sig Weapon can break--it isn't Orichalchum after all...but that it can also be reforged. Further, I wouldn't charge my players cash to repair it (or only a token amount...certainly not the cost of the weapon...because then they could just get a new one). If they had the skills, I'd let them do it themselves...in a dramatic montage scene by the anvil. Or there may be a little quest to a Master Smith. The hero's quest to reforge his broken weapon does seem in genre.

Well, there's nothing in the perk that implies that a broken weapon ceases to be signature gear. Getting it repaired seems similar enough to finding it if lost; the perk guarantees it can be done, but does not relieve the player of the burden of doing it.

But I don't think that means they have to pay for it. Then there is no difference between it and non-Signature Gear. Signature Gear is supposed to be special.

Signature Gear is special. It's not 'free'. Do you think Han doesn't spend most of his paychecks keeping the Millennium Falcon fueled, repaired, and maintained?

Were I the GM, I would take the enchantment through use rules in Thaumatology, and give your sword some extra oomph. Perhaps ask you to purchase the named possession perk though.
