My staple spells for a generalist wizard include Missile Shield, Continual Light, Apportion, Move Earth, and Recover Energy.

I second the recommendation that every wizard have a Missile spell and a Melee spell. The exact spells depend on what other spells the wizard has the prerequisites for. I tend to favor Lightning Bolt for the metal armor penetration and Walk on Air as a useful prerequisite, but it really depends on the other choices.
