The method puts me in mind of the secret book that Jade Fox stole in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

So...a basic grimoire might look like:
Cleansing
Ward
Curse Sanctum
Empower

Scry
Aura Reading
Dispel Ritual
Banish
Exorsize

Summon
Bind
Fetish
I still like your list Cernig. It would be a useful basic list in any setting with Path/Book magic. As such it's of universal use and could inspire and instruct those setting up the basics of Wizardry in any setting because it is about those basics. Once again thank-you.

Does anyone think a Pyramid article covering a probable (i.e. useable in a wide variety of Fantasy setting) Wizard's Library for Path/Book mages would be a good idea?

Oh, yes. That would be quite helpful.

I've always thought the best first spell a wizard or any "book magic" type should learn is a basic Light spell, so they can study all night without spending money on candles and the risk of burning down the place with all the books.

The "library card" of a Mage Guild would be casting a light spell. If you can do that, come on in! You've got a minimum of talent and a desire for knowledge.

The power of words, to some The First Words.. "Let there be Light."

Anyway, just my thoughts.

I'd allow wizards to buy it as an Accessory Perk.

It would certainly be hard to fit into the Path/Book framework. Doing a 10 minute ritual to avoid lighting a candle seems like a bit much.

A book of Gainful Illuminations with a few simple spells allowing greater control over light and fire would be a shrewd started book. Or at least I get the impression you guys would go for that sort of thing.
