Yes, that is a great idea.

It would be nice to know whom you may be familiar with through posts to ease any introductions.

I'm hoping I can attend, but I won't know till closer to the convention.

Need to figure out where the nearest store where I can get sugar-based sodas is -- can't have HFCS any more.... (Bottles of water will also be acquired; I know what convention centers are like -- "in the desert, water is life". :) )

Yes, I hear you on that.

I'm disappointed that more convenience stores don't stock alternate soft drinks with real sugar.

We have HEB grocery stores here. They sell there own brand of sodas with real sugar in many flavors, both in bottles and cans I believe.

There's a company called Maine Root Beer that is popular in Austin. Their bottled drinks, in a variety of flavors, are all real sugar. I've seen some restaurants provide them as fountain drinks too, like Pint House Pizza and Taco Deli.

Everything Tom said is correct. However, I'm going to recommend a trip to a Spec's store, if you have a car, simply because the variety of sugar-based sodas (as well as other beverages, adult and otherwise) is mind-boggling. Plus they have tasty cheeses and other snacks.

I don't have a car-rental, but I think I might get one, just to be on the safe side. (So far as cars go: I don't know what the parking situation is like at the con-site, which is why I got a hotel within reasonable walking distance.)

There's a decent amount of parking. It's almost all around back, so not obvious from Street View.

Many convenience stores will have a couple of cane sugar drinks, keep an eye out for Imperial Sugar-labeled Dr Pepper; My personal favorite and remarkably easy to find in Texas gas stations.
Sugar Coke from Mexico is fairly common too.
Also look for Dublin Bottling Works sodas, they’re the best and all their drinks are cane sugar.

Maine Root has pretty much pushed Dublin out of the market in Austin. There are a few restaurants with Dublin fountains (including Cabo Bob’s, close to the con site but on the other side of the interstate and stuck with the worst parking lot exit I’ve ever seen - I would eat there a lot more if it didn’t sometimes take 15 minutes just to leave) but, again, MR is a lot more common down here.

Travel tip for those flying in for the show: give yourself plenty of extra time for departure and plan to visit the restaurants inside the airport. Most of them are local, not chains, so the quality may be higher than you’re used to getting from airport terminal food.

Hi,
Unfortunately there is a slight personal issue that makes it so I can not attend. Is there any chance of getting s ticket refund, and if so, who do I need to contact.
