Default Munchkin Cthulhu - Solar Eclipse card effect and participants in combat

Which means, exactly, "participants in combat"? Are they only the active player of the turn and his helper? Or anyone who has added a monster in combat, by any card effect (wandering monster, goth or undead), or strengthened a monster in combat, can also be considered in combat? In my opinion, what counts is the second option, since it is much more detrimental to the active player of the turn, and because the text of the card itself says that IF, AND ONLY IF, some card is left, it goes to the active player of the turn. This text would not make much sense if only the active player and his helper were considered in combat. The doubt arose in a recent match and we did not reach a consensus on that.

I don't think we've ever treated that word differently, but only those fighting the Monsters are considered participants in the combat. Helping either side, adding Monsters, etc. does not make one a participant in the combat from the game's rules perspective.

I'm not sure why the card needs to be considered any more detrimental than it is, as it removes the choice the players have in what Treasure they get. Often, negotiations over who will help involve order of choice.
