Car Wars Fourth Edition has the Five-Phase Movement Chart, a rule that was introduced in 1989 or 1990.

Car Wars Classic and Car Wars Compendium Second Edition Fifth Printing (CWC 2.5; black and green cover) both have the Five-Phase Movement Chart.

The Compendium 2nd edition (both covers) use the 5-phase movement chart and are part of the 4th edition of the game.

The chart also appeared in the L'Outrance supplement (page 8) during the 3rd Edition (Compendium 1st edition) era.

Confused by all the editions?

Basically the original pocket box 'classic' game was 10 phases. People call it first edition but it was never called that officially.

Second edition - black and green compendium - 5 phases - this was just merging phases from the original btw so it's not really different. This is also the Uncle Al's Catalog from hell. That's the book with the timeline going into 2044.

Third and fourth edition? Never really happened officially but some people call it that because there were a series of rule revisions and balancing changes.

The 'current game' you see at conventions is usually referred to as fourth edition, but it's really the black and green second edition compendium and the Uncle Al's Catalog from Hell.

Fifth edition - abomination. The edition that shall not be named.

Sixth edition - the current kickstarter - looks good we all love it and are 100% behind it!

In CW's defense it was the 80's and 90's before the internet, it wasn't possible to update all the rules easily.

Thank you Magesmiley for mentioning L'Outrance.

The Five Phase Movement Chart was also published in ADQ 8/1.

Here is another Car Wars Edition list.

First Edition
* Ziplock Bag Car Wars

Second Edition
* Pocket Box Car Wars
* Pocket Box Truck Stop
* Pocket Box Sunday Drivers
* Pocket Box Crash City
* Autoduel Champions
* The AADA Vehicle Guide Volume 1

Third Edition
* Car Wars Deluxe Edition (white cover rulebook)

Fourth Edition
* Car Wars Compendium First Edition First Printing (CWC 1.1; blue cover rulebook)
* Car Wars Compendium Second Edition First Printing (CWC 2.1; blue cover rulebook)
* Car Wars Classic Box Set (blue cover box and white cover rulebook)
* Car Wars Compendium Second Edition Fifth Printing (CWC 2.5; black and green cover rulebook)
* Uncle Albert's Catalog from Hell
* Autoduel Quarterly Vol. 10, No. 4: Evil Stevie Returns
* Pyramid Magazine Second Edition: Uncle Albert's Catalog Supplements 2048, 2050, and 2051

Fifth Edition
* Division 5 Sets 1, 2, and 3
* Division 10 Sets 1, 2, and 3
* Division 15 Sets 1, 2, and 3
* Car Wars Fifth Edition Arena Book 1
* Car Wars Fifth Edition Division 5 Vehicle Guide

Sixth Edition

Pocket Box Car Wars was printed as Car Wars Second Edition, Car Wars Third Edition, and Car Wars Third Edition Revised. The differences between these were few compared to the differences between Pocket Box Car Wars and the Car Wars Deluxe Edition white cover rulebook that combined Pocket Box Car Wars, Pocket Box Truck Stop, Pocket Box Crash City, Autoduel Champions, and content from Autoduel Quarterly.

Personally, I disagree with the above classification, as the important distinction is the rules.

IMO, everything prior to the Deluxe Edition is 1st edition Car Wars. The differences in rules between the ziplock and pocket box are essentially nonexistent.

The Deluxe Edition is effectively the 2nd Edition of the game, as it made considerable changes.

The 1st edition Compendium again had very different rules and was the 3rd edition of the game.

The remainder I'd agree with.

Yeah it's kinda confusing when the final and supposedly definitive rules compendium (black and green) says "second edition" right on the cover, but players refer to it as fourth edition or 2.5 edition (or 2.5e) interchangeably.

Owen is a good historian though!

Bottom line is still the same - the "second edition" black and green compendium and the Uncle Al's Catalog from Hell are convention Car Wars until 6e comes out. However, if someone wanted to roll with a pocket box design at a convention it'd be 95% compatible. Don't play CW at a convention and expect everyone to use the same rules.

I played at Dundracon - great game, ignored the rule breaks because nobody can be expected to remember everything.

Ziplock Bag Car Wars was its own game.

When the Pocket Box Car Wars sets were released, the game significantly expanded.

Car Wars Deluxe Edition was the first attempt to compile most of the core rules into one rulebook.

Car Wars Compendium First Edition First Printing tried to repeat the success of the Car Wars Deluxe Edition rulebook, but had significant errata issues. Car Wars Compendium Second Edition (both printings) attempted to address those problems.
