Divine Adversaries
I have been read the Old Testament lately, especially the story of the plagues and the story of Lot. It seems that there is material there that could be used in a dungeon. Maybe the Dungeon is undergoing some sort of series of plagues due to the evil inside of it or the fact that there might be prisoners inside it that the Divine wishes to free. Or maybe the Dungeon is in the process of being smote when the PCs enter it? Possibly due to the evil inside of it? Or maybe there could be an angel of death lurking around killing monsters and other evil doers there but may also attack PCs too? There could even be some sort of angelic guardian that might prevent the PCs from opening evil that has been sealed away? The greedy PCs of course are opening up the lich lair for material gain so are viewed as evil? Just some thoughts...

Re: Divine Adversaries
There is something like this in one of the Paizo adventures.
Short form as spoiler free as I can manage is that the enemy has control of an ancient fortress that needs to go away. Certain key points in this fortress have divine servitors who must be either convinced to let you break the thing that they are protecting, or be themselves destroyed. |

Any dungeons filled with plagues of frogs and locusts? Having all the water in the Dungeon turned to blood would be sort of creepy too. Lice and boils might be nasty for adventurers to get too. |
