I wouldn't say better than "perhaps physically possible".

You'd need an old neutron star whose void had filled in and we might still detect it from collisions with Oort Cloud objects smaller than planets. These would be far more probable than the very large object collision your scenario needs. They'd still be bright in the more energetic (and conspicuous) parts of the EM spectrum.

Thread resurrect!

A recent paper in Science Advances, UV-B radiation was the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary terrestrial extinction kill mechanism, supports the idea that severe ozone-layer depletion is sufficient to cause an extinction-level event. It mentions several additional effects, such as organic runoff from dead plant matter on land leading to algal blooms, oxygen depletion, and toxic/ozone depleting gas production in coastal ocean waters.
