This is loosely relevant but it is about vampires. I once wrote a short story where after Russia was invaded in 1941 a party of Allied agents were assigned to make the first meeting with the NKVD. They made all sorts of black-humor type vampire jokes ("Did you bring the garlic and the holy water?) that kind of thing.

As I have said before if you really want to go down the vampire lore rabbit hole read Theresa Bane's 2010 Encyclopedia Of Vampire Mythology (available on Internet Archive and enacademic) which has the folklore of 800 (yes that is six hundred) of the life drainers.

According to that book the Bebarlang believe that they are all born as astral vampires.
