[IC] Shattered Magic -- GURPS 4e High magic fantasy
It's a grey morning in Farstream. Though the sun has been up for a few hours, it's still not warm. A late winter breeze drifts through the town, and the few people on the town's main street are glad for their cloaks.
The town's two hundred odd residents are mostly farmers, and those that aren't work in the shops that the farmers frequent. The only real exception to the rule is the Dead Horse, an inn that caters to travelers along the road between Quanton and Hillen City. Too far from either city to be paved, the road bears deep ruts that sprain the occasional careless child's ankle. Half a mile up the road heading northwest is the eponymous stream that has marked the border of Hillen and Quanton for generations. All around the town are the fields of wheat and alfalfa, on whose sale and consumption the town survives. Just under a mile to the East is an arm of the Trabnis Woods. The Dead Horse -- so called for its horse sign, which hangs from its feet -- is the tallest building in town, a less-than-towering two stories. The upper holds rooms to be rented, and the lower serves food, beer, and gossip. On this morning the bottom floor holds five people: The innkeeper stands behind the counter wiping dishes; a carpenter whose specialty is carts is getting an early start on the day, already halfway through his second beer; Father Boadeus, a quiet priest who arrived the evening before, has been sitting in a corner most of the morning; Korbinian Poldi and his daughter, who arrived exhausted long after sundown the night before, have gotten a late start on the day and are eating breakfast. |

"Eat Alycia, eat." Korbin tells the young girl. "I know your tired and the bed was comfortable, but here we ma find help for you. Good girl."
The Bandaging on her head is dirty. Not much to be done, very little linen to be found on the road. The Innkeeper did send one of his girls to get some clean cloth. The wound the bandages covered looked far better than it had before they started traveling. The girl's natural ability to heal was unaffected by whatever seemed to be diluting the effects of healing magicks, even if the blow to the head seemed to adjust her thaumaturgical state. She resisted spells cast on her where she hadn't before. The treehouse wasn't even that tall.... He'd been seeking herbs when it happened, but the tale of what had hapened formed a picture in his mind he couldn't lose. Alycia and her friend Maude had climbed up easily enough, built for his older boys at then his chin's height, it was barely above his own eyes now. Taking a couple of sticks as swords, they proclaimed it their fort and declaring some passing boys barbarian invaders, defied them to take their castle. The boys ran off to find their own sticks and Maude and Alycia fought for practice. Then Alycia fell perhaps 2 yards and hit her head on the root of the damned tree that was sticking up. His little girl now understood maybe 100 words, and could speak several of them. There had to be a cure.

Re: [IC] Shattered Magic -- GURPS 4e High magic fantasy
Koban closes his eyes against the sudden gust of cold wind cuts across him as he enters the town via its main thoroughfare. He pauses for a brief moment. Damn the chill. Koban looks for his Inner Strength and concentrates on the cold air immediately around his body. Quickly he links his "Self" to the air around him and the air to his Self and body, and then exerts his Will...
The who whole thing takes just about ten second. The air begins to warm around him, subtly. Feeling much more comfortable Koban begins walking again. His eyes scan across the buildings in front of him. Quite a nice town. A lot like Tilfin*; although, I have to admit, Farstream is prettier... And livelier. The irony burns in his mind as he thinks of the sick villagers for whom he has come to Farstream looking for a cure to end the plague. Hang in there, Theor. After asking around for a bit, Koban decides that if he is going to get any information about why the healing herbs and healing magics are not helping any of the Tilfin villagers, the Dead Horse would be the right place to start. ------------------ Koban looks at the inn's sign: Clever. The monk is not tall and slight of form; yet he is also well muscled and obviously fit. His auburn hair would be mid-neck length; however, it is pulled up tight in a top-knot. He wears only plain traveling clothes. Koban stops briefly at the bar and asks politely for water and soup if they have any (if not, some vegetables would suffice). Then, setting his pack down, he takes a seat at a table across from the where the man and a little girl sit. He smiles briefly to them and then sits, looking weary and troubled. OOC: I don't know how you are doing rolls. I generally use Invisible Castle, so here is my roll for the Warmth spell above (Prot. & Warn. @ 14; -4 for Prerequisite count for Warmth = Prot. & Warn. @ 10): Prot. & Warn.: 10 . You can click the link for "link to character" to see if I have rolled any other rolls ;). *I named my village Tilfin. If you'd like to give it another name, let me know, so I can edit it. The solitary priest averted his gaze from the window to hold up an emtpy tankard to the barman, a quick nod gave the clear signal for another beer. Taking the opportunity Father Boadeus checked across the bar to see what other wandering souls shared the inn this morning. There were two solitary patrons of little intrest to him at the moment, but one girl sat with a man he assumed to be her father, caught the Father's eye. She was injured and was clearly in need of some basic attention, perhaps her companion would think to ask him for assistance. He was quickly distracted from his thoughts by the barman; Father Boadeus turned to retrieve his drink and added a request for a simple breakfast of bread and cheese to accompany it.

The bar man eyes Koban with mild interest as he walks in from the street.
Quote:
He pours water from a large jug into a roughly shapen mug, and hands it to Koban. As he's walking out to the back room, Father Boadeus catches his eye; the barman holds up one finger, indicating to the priest that he'll be right back. He returns shortly with a bowl of mildly warm soup for Koban, and collects the beer mug from Boadeus' table. "Trying to catch up with Martin, are you?" He tilts his head towards the tipsy carpenter. Re: [IC] Shattered Magic -- GURPS 4e High magic fantasy
Arlen arrives at the Inn and with a view at the empty street he decides to walk inside after a short moment.
While shaking of the cold he takes a look around in the room. He nods to the nearby persons and greets them a bit reserved. Moving on through the room Arlen goes to the bar man and asks if he could bring him some warm mead or tea and a hot mulligan or something like that to his table. Then, politely asking - "Do you mind if I take a seat?" - he takes place at a side of the table where the monk [Koban] is sitting and waits for his meal. -- Arlen is not tall and though not looking strong, he seems to be agile and robust. He wears dark-brown rough trousers, a beige leather jacket with an obviously self-made fur collar and lining (not being a master-piece of design but functional and solid) and boots of brown leather. All of his clothes look like they've seen a lot of travelling though nothing seems to be worn out, yet. With him he carries a leather backpack. Last edited by OldSam; 06-20-2009 at 07:20 AM. |

Re: [IC] Shattered Magic -- GURPS 4e High magic fantasy
Koban looks a little startled when the man takes a seat, and it takes a couple of seconds for him to gather himself back together. He never really handles company well... And to make matters worse, it seems that someone always wants to join him when he comes into town.
"Um... Sure. Of course. Please." |

When the bar man comes back with the meal, Arlen takes the chance to ask him if he has heard of any planned treks to Quanton or elsewhere in the next days and if maybe he knows whether anyone is seeking a guide.

Fancy meeting you here! or shamelessly giving us reason to meet
The little girl stops eating, stands up and says 'no feel good'. And underscores that point by falling down onto the floor unconcious.
"Alycia!!!!" the man yells and gets around to her.
