As a friend of mine pointed out, the only proper conclusion to this story is the discovery that the coins don't actually exist at all.
(The £2 coin has form for designers being let loose on it without supervision: the original reverse has concentric bands representing the advancement of technology. The ring of gears has an odd number of gears in it, so would be incapable of movement.)
