Back against the wall
One of the criteria to initiate HTH is for the opponent to have their back against the wall. Does this mean the figure against the wall? Just the rear hexside?

Rear hex side against a wall, pillar, huge boulder, etc.

Re: Back against the wall
It would seem to say that, though I take it as whether the hex is open or not (so other figures or obstacles such as pits would also count), and I also take it as the hex on the opposite side of the attacker, as otherwise there are some weird situation that don't make much sense to me, like when you're trying to tackle someone through their Side hex, it's hard for me to see why their Rear hex would be relevant at all.

Re: Back against the wall
Here is how I interpret the various conditions to allow initiating HTH:
(conditions itemization from ITL page 116): a) foe has back to a wall, or lying down, prone, kneeling: - easy part: if foe is down or kneel it is allowed - back to wall I allow if rear is to wall, of if opposite hexside is to a wall. That is, sometimes it is flank on the wall but I count that as rear from the attempt. b) enemy has lower MA: - HTH allowed from any direction. Keeping in mind you first have to stop due to engaging from front, thus may have to wait to initiate HTH until action phase. c) attacker comes from rear: - I treat this as rear and flank hexside. That is, the foe has no ability to impede movement by engagement or threaten damage from these facings. - I also treat attack from directly above under this (gargoyle pouncing) d) enemy agrees to HTH - I have never seen anyone agree to this. ;-) But yea easy if it ever happens. |
