A constitutional single party republic, but one where every elected position has multiple candidates selected by the party to choose between.

Seems as though the "parties" here would be factions within the single party.

With the Very Important Difference that everyone has pledged allegiance to the Self-Evident Truths of the Party and is pretending to be comrades.

How is that functionally any different than a multi-party state where everybody has pledged allegiance to the flag and are pretending to be equal fellow citizens?

A one-party system that actually allows wide membership and internal contests is basically just another grade of citizenship - not much different than limiting the franchise to guild members, property owners, or the properly baptized.

Pre and post October Revolution Russia? Trading the Duma for the Central Committee of the CPSU.

In a multi-party state, if the party excludes you from itself, you ask to become a member of a different party, or make your own. In a single-party state, if you're excluded by The party, you're excluded from politics and there's nothing you can do about it, no matter how many people want to vote for you or how much money you have.

And the amount of control the party exerts over its membership varies. Sometimes its used as a tool to enforce a dictatorship, and sometimes it just ensures that certain lines aren't crossed, and it has serious factions inside of it.

Wouldn't the state religion effectively have sects that are counterparts to parties? Kind of like Pharisees and Sadducees?

And if a multi-party state that lifts your voting rights you are just as excluded. We have an amendment on the ballot here in Florida next month to potentially re-enfranchise about 10% of our voting age citizens that's been done to. Depending on how you structure your "one party", the differences can be fairly minor - and a "one party" that can and does have rival factions is largely just using different labels that the one claiming to be a multi-party state. If the party could easily exclude members, why doesn't whichever faction is currently in control kick out their rivals? It's not like they need them in the coalition to win elections, right?

Because of the balance of the factions in the committee which deals with party membership. As Stalin once said:

Factional infighting has it's own special flavour. Tis almost a national sport, politically down here in 'Straya.
