SHVY - Standard unit or "mini-Ogre" unit?
When playing with SHVYs, how do you typically use them? Do you primarily use them as the standard D5 2AU unit, or do you use them as the component "mini-Ogre" version with the record sheet?

The former, mainly for simplicity's sake. If there's no other "record sheet" units involved, I have been known to use the latter.

Always a standard unit. I don’t believe the original intent was to have them be “mini-Ogres”.

Ditto, standard unit, no record keeping. For me, too much extra paperwork ruins the game.

Same. I've never used the SHVY record sheet, just the counter version.

Re: SHVY - Standard unit or "mini-Ogre" unit?
Honestly, I rarely play them at all. If I played Ceasefire Collapse more, I'd probably use them a lot more. But most of my play is bog-standard Smash-the-CP Ogre or Breakthrough, and Superheavies are poor choices for either of those. Ogre missiles make it go squish at 1:1 in a Smash-the-CP. And it can't cover as much of a defensive line as a MHWZ in Breakthrough.
The best time I ever had with one was in a micro scenario: 1 SHVY + 2 HVYs vs 1 HVY + 4 GEVs on the TFT Melee playmat. I used the record sheet 3 AU version for that. That extra range and survivability and screening makes taking one out with a GEV strike team an interesting little challenge. Range 3 changes everything you think you know about armor-armor engagements. With screening, they're a tough nut to crack. |

[nod] I did a mini-scenario featuring a RS SHV vs. equivalent PV in Archaic Armor And INF. It did not go well for the latter.

Standard.
The SHVY has evolved over the years. The article in OGREZine 2 is an excellent treatise on how it changed from a D4 unit to the D5 one with APs and how the VP point value has been an issue. I won't go into the article in depth here. I'll just say that I prefer the current SHVY incarnation, but with the 2.5 AU (15 VPs) cost. The exception being that if playing the standard "Get the CP" scenario on the orange map, I will use the 2 AU (12 VPs) cost.

Another ditto — counter version at 2.5 AU has worked great in a large number of games with large numbers of players.

Re: SHVY - Standard unit or "mini-Ogre" unit?
I play it as a standard unit--it's not worth the effort for me to keep track of treads on a superheavy. And because my games have a lot of nonstandard units, I'm not too worried about the AU cost.
