Low-Tech book Rope problems
I made a GCA file using the stats for rope in the Low Tech book. I am not happy. I may go back and double check my math to be sure. But it seems that the way to go is to buy very thin rope (cord) and have it be made of silk rather than buy normal rope. This stems from the way rope cost and weight and 'support' load are calculated, based on the cross sectional area.
I am curious if anyone else has played around with making an equipment list using the stats for Low Tech Rope and have run into this problem. -Thanks for you time. |

The way to go for what? Silk rope support 50 lb per dollar spent and decays fairly rapidly, hemp rope supports 67 lb per dollar spent and doesn't.

Re: Low-Tech book Rope problems
Could you give an example?
I would assign skill penalties and possibly pain levels to someone who used rope too thick or thin for the job. Thin silk rope would also have low HP, so just looking at weight ("low good!") and strength ("high good!") may not be the best model. And finally, silk rope should only be available in areas with an extensive silk industry ... in pseudo-Europe I would make a little available every few years for five or ten times the list price. If its 2 cm cable and they want 5 mm cord then too bad for them.

The price for silk assumes it is produced locally and is freely available. I would probably apply luxury pricing even in China unless you were in one of the towns that actually produced it.
