Default Charity vs giving away

So last night I found myself in the rare position of being the last level. My wife and I got into this discussion. So while I understand the rules to be if you are going to discard for the sake of getting your hand down to 5 cards it is supposed to be they go to the lowest level player. She was trying to play (the well I'm not discarding I'm giving it away to someone else like a trade I'm just not asking for anything in return card) to avoid giving me the cards. Just wanted a little clarification on the matter. So I guess the question is instead of discarding are you allowed to just give the card away to anyone you want or does it automatically go to the lowest level player?

You cannot give someone cards out of your hand because you want to. If they are cards that can be played on someone, you may play them. Otherwise, you have to give them as Charity.
