Default New player: Question about main set.

I recently played Munchkin with someone who owns it, and now I'm about to buy it for myself. I found a place to get the original set. What I read is there's about 94 doors and 74 treasures. There's just something I'm worried about. The other guy had a few expansions and we didn't get halfway through the cards. But the amount of cards the first set has sounds like it won't be very long, by my guess. I just want to know if I should be worrying about it.

I'll be playing it with just my brother mainly, and plan on getting expansions when possible. I just want to hear if you guys think the original set may be underwhelming. I don't want to be going through most of the deck every game. I'm hoping to do some games to level 20 too.

Then, you should definetely get some expansions. Many games I've played with only the base set go through all of the Door and Treasure cards. But with only one expansion, like Unnatural Axe, this doesn't happen very often.

Thanks. Might be able to get expansions soon too. Do they usually cost less than the main set?

Yes, the expansions are less than the main set :)

But not by much.
Still, definitely buy ALL the expansions!

I plan on buying them all in order when I can. I read someone complain about Need For Steed, saying it gives too many bonuses and not enough negative things like curses. Is it really bad like that? Are there any you'd recommend avoiding?

Need for Steed is a good expansion, especially since it adds 14 race cards (7 Lizard Guys, 7 Centaurs) to the game. It also does add more boosts to the mix, which makes the games go faster... but then again, 7 is full of creatures and enhancers and other such things. 8 doesn't do much to offset the power levels that monsters can and will reach from assistance from your opponents.

6 and 7 can be "avoided" sorta.

6 is a very small variant; barely bigger than packs, actually. 7 is basically a set that's designed to make games go more smoothly, adding in a lot of Cheat cards, multi-breed and multi-class cards, etc. 7 isn't meant to be added in unless you have several expansions already in the mix.

The downside of 7 is that it is a set of 112 cards but doesn't add any races or classes, so it ends up diluting things pretty badly in regards to them.

If you get EVERYTHING in the game, races and classes get really, really diluted. Munchkin Fantasy is in pretty desperate need of a pack of Races & Classes, or something else to pump more races & classes into the mix.

Anyway, if you play 1-5+8, you should probably be more than okay for balance purposes.

That would be Half Horse, Will Travel. Though Need for Steed IS a good expansion, too.

Er... yeah, that. Got my expansions confused - I think I own too many.

Thanks a lot emilling, and others who replied. I'll be remembering this stuff when I buy more. Got the main set today finally. :)
