Yes, this was my confusion.

I was also caught-up by the doubles your acceleration, but if you look at High Speed Movement B394 it talks about accelerating and decelerating by your basic move with anything faster than your basic move being high speed movement(which is +20% or +1 whichever is more, unless you already have a different top-speed from something like enhanced move)

Then in the last paragraph on B396 "High speed flying and swimming" it says to use your basic air/water move instead of your basic move.

I had never put those two together, so I had always thought that a flyer accelerated by their basic speed instead of their flight move(which starts at basic speed x2).

This is good to know since I will start playing a 2' tall flying gnome in just under 2 weeks(Race is based on Orko from He-Man)

Part of the problem being that Flight's movement rate is based off your Basic Speed rather than your Basic Move to begin with, which does not help much with clarifying points like this.

'Basic Move' is really 'land move'
Air move and Water Move are based off Basic speed just like land move is.

If air/water move was based off basic(aka land) move then it would be much more expensive to model a character like a bird or Etherial(x-com floating aliens with atrophied bodies) which has good air move but lousy ground move. And any character that could fly in any way(air-speed<>0) would be able to buy up basic move for 1 point per level(Basic move+1[5] air move-2[-4]), or for free if you have amphibious(Basic move+1[5] water move-1[-5])

It is also not uncommon to have Enhanced Move (air) which will requre you to accelerate at you air move rate.

After all an air move 10 is only 20 mph.
