Metric
I was surprised that TFT was metric given that GURPS is imperial.
Will the new TFT remain metric? |

There was a huge debate about this, with people asking for their favourite system, and the admin's closed it down. I don't believe SJG has said one way or another yet. Warm regards, Rick. |

Re: Metric
I guess I don't really mind one way or another.
In GURPS we just say 1 m = 1 yard (what is the abbreviation for yard? )and 1 kg = 2 lb. Being an Australian, we converted to metric 48 years ago (I'm almost 56) so metric is what I think of. Having said that, I think of people as 6 foot tall and 100kg and babies at 53 cm long and 3 lb 6 oz. Everything else is metric, but I don't really care. Certainly don't start another argument! |

Re: Metric
I did settle on imperial for the new edition, yes. I think in imperial and that ended up overriding some good arguments for leaving it metric.
No flames, please - we had those already. |

But picking something the writer (and proofreaders) are comfortable with is a really good reason for selecting units. I've seen more than one paper in print with obvious errors that I'm sure slipped through only because the author messed up a unit conversion (often a really simple one like Angstroms to nanometers, never mind reciprocal centimeters to megahertz) and wasn't familiar enough with the expected range of numbers in this one to catch it.

Re: Metric
It's hard to believe, but back in the late 70's we all thought that the Imperial system of measurement was short lived and would be replaced, by the mid-eighties, by the Metric system. Um.... so, that didn't happen. I always thought it was a good exercise for my little teenage brain to convert Metric into Imperial. I'm perfectly fine with Steve changing back... as my brain is still little, but much older and slower.
Yours is in geriatrics, Tolenkar

Re: Metric
Personally, I think going Imperial was an excellent choice, but then, as I said over on the closed thread, I could easily live with either one.
Glad that's finally resolved! ;-) |

Re: Metric
If you're doing physics type calculations it's desirable to convert to a consistent measurement system (i.e. the unit of force is (mass unit)*(distance unit)/(time unit^2), the unit of energy is (mass unit)*(distance unit^2)/(time unit^2), etc), which SI is and Imperial by default is not, but that's not really a factor for most RPGs until you descend into stuff like weapon and vehicle design, and doesn't have to be even then.
