Afflictions + Aura question
So I was wondering if there was a way to make an Affliction with an aura that would affect any one in the aura without a roll but would end the instant they leave the aura. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place or anything, this is my first post on this site.

Welcome! This is a reasonable question, and in exactly the right place. I don't know the answer, but someone will.

I have had an idea, I don't know if its right or even if it would work.
Take the basic advantage you want to give people then apply the area enhancement and the selective enhancement. That would make the effect cover an area and only the people you want to affect.

Re: Afflictions + Aura question
Power Ups: Enhancements has examples of very similar ideas, with Auras of Power and Bard Songs.
You can't just put Area Effect on a random advantage - that doesn't transfer it to other people First you need Affects Others, which is +50% per person, touch range. then you can add Area Effect, which doesn't get over the +50% per person. I don't think you need Selective Area with this build.

Re: Afflictions + Aura question
I looked in power ups 4 but that only kinda helps. The problem is I was looking for a way to make it atleast not a quick contest or have the enemy roll to resist. What I'm hoping for at worst is i have to make a will roll and if I succeed it works. It will be causing disadvantages so malediction doesn't quite work.

I'm pretty sure there's no way to get rid of a Resistance roll in GURPS. You CAN take 10 or so levels of the Affliction to give them a -10 on the roll; that'll screw over most people.

Re: Afflictions + Aura question
PU4 does include Selective Area in the Aura of Power and Bard Song bundles. This is necessary if you want to choose who gets afflicted. If you're willing to afflict anyone that comes close, even if they're your friends, then you can omit Selective Area.
Malediction has nothing to do with whether or not you're Afflicting a Disadvantage. Regular Afflictions can do that. The difference is that Malediction makes the attack "spell-like" by bypassing DR and replacing the ranged attack roll and statistics with a Will roll to attack. Instead of a HT roll to resist, the victim gets a Will roll. You can choose the target stat with "Based On X". Regardless, the victim gets some sort of resistance roll. Removing the possibility of any defense against an attack is quite expensive, understandably so. Even the +300% "Cosmic (Irresistable Attack)" doesn't eliminate resistance rolls. Is the game really going to be more fun if everyone is helpless before this character? Not even "save or suck", but just "suck"? Also consider that turnabout is fair play; how would you feel if enemies showed up with abilities your characters could not defend against in any manner? |

Re: Afflictions + Aura question
Affliction 1: Malediction (Any level), {Insert disadvantage here), Reduced Duration 1/60, Cosmic: No Rule of 16 (+50%), Melee C, Aura. Throw in excessive will, and rolling is no longer necessary for NPCs.
