Default Drawing cards after death?

my friend said last night that when you die you must draw 4 new door and 4 new treasure cards? is this true cause it seems to me that when you die at certain moments it can turn out very good for you?

That is correct. However, to clarify, you do not draw the card until the start of that player's turn. So, if you have a 4 person game and you die. You don't draw cards until the start of your next turn.

Death can be a strategically good thing. I have been in many games where we used Death to further our chances of winning.

Yes, really. It's documented in the rules pretty clearly.

I have a question related to this thread. Is death the only time when you may draw eight new cards? My friends and I have only recently started playing Munchkin and we have played the game such that if you have used/played all of the cards in your hand (i.e. at the start of your turn, before you have kicked down the door you have no cards in your hand) you pick up eight new cards (four door, four treasure) but I suspect that may not be the correct way to play.

Your suspicions are correct. The only time you draw 8 new cards like at the start of the game is after returning from Death. Having an empty hand does not, typically, get you any special favors.
