Default Discworld RPG and Mars Attack preorders arrived

Discworld RPG: 408 page hardback, the fattest GURPS book I've ever seen.

Mars Attacks: 96 page hardback, the skinniest GURPS hardback I've ever seen.

Both are colorful on the outside, looking like most GURPS 4E hardbacks.

The difference is that Mars Attacks is also colorful on the inside, with a bunch of full-color art, and color-coded chapter bars. While Discworld is monochromatic on the inside.

(Reviews to follow, after I have time to read several hundred pages of GURPS. It's going to be a fun weekend.)

I've now received copies of both (in the UK) that I preordered. I was sent FedEx tracking information, and they came fast - faster than predicted, even.

No argument there...

No sign of my Discworld book yet from my FLGS in Oxford... Maybe tomorrow???

Can't wait given the very positive comments from the lucky few that I've seen here on the Forum.

Esdevium Games are the leading games distributor in the UK, and their weekly New Releases list is a pretty good guide to what's coming. (Leisure Games, for example, tend to echo that.) No sign of these books there yet, but one might have hopes for next week (if they don't take a Christmas break).

Mars Attacks is cheaper to do in color since its much smaller. Also could hit a younger audience.

Given the size of Discworld if it was full color it would be even bigger than it is now. Personally I like Paul Kidby's pencil work.

Considering that the Mars Attacks trading cards were the source for every adaptation, from the movie to the dice games to my GURPS book, we basically didn't see the point in doing this if we weren't reproducing their beautiful full-color art. Basically, it does double duty as a GURPS supplement for gamers and a "coffee table book" for Mars Attacks fans. And we started with that assumption to work out how many pages we could include and still sell it at a reasonable cost.

In other words, it's less that "Mars Attacks was just 96 pages so we decided to do it in color" and more that "we knew Mars Attacks had to be done in color, so we budgeted for 96 pages." Same thing overall, but different emphasis. :)

The converse, in terms of starting needs and priorities, is that with the Discworld RPG we knew that Pratchett's text and worldbuilding (and Master's development of them) were the key. So there, we used every trick we could to squeeze as much wordcount into the book as possible, and then approached art, layout, etc., with the goal of keeping the price reasonable. Hence the B&W internal art.

I appreciate that. I just picked up my copy of Mars Attacks today and can see the coffee table bit. While light on the new crunch its a pleasure to look at and flip through.
I was pleasantly surprised but my FLGS had one copy of both books on it shelves. So they did more than just cover the preorders.
