Concerning curses and hirelings

Can a curse card that curses on item that gives combat bonuse be used to curse hireling which gives bonus of 1. I'm thinking not because I don't believe that a hireling is an item. Thanks

Some Hirelings have a value in gold pieces or specifically say "No Value", these hirlings are items and are subject to item rules, however most do not say anything about values and are not items.

There are also very few such Hirelings that are also Items (at least in Fantasy). Budget Steed (yes, it is a Hireling) is the only one in Fantasy and for the purposes of the curse that is mentioned, it doesn't give you a bonus; unless you previously enhanced it with a Hireling Enhancer or Steed Enhancer. . .

This is an old thread, but just in case someone (else) stumbles upon it I feel I should point out that the Budget Steed is not an item: the gold piece value is an errata.
