Default Entelodonts - A favorite monster of mine.

Permission is given to Steve Jackson to use this in exchange for acknowledging my work.

Hell Hog: (a.k.a Entelodont.)
Lacking tusks they are more likely to ambush to ram and trample. They also are willing to go into HTH to bite. They mass ~700 kg and stand 1.5 meters tall at the shoulder.

Hell Hog: 3 hex creature
ST 26 to 42
DX 12
IQ 5 or 6 (usually 6 for adults.)

MA 16

Bite: ............... 2d+2 ... (HTH only)
Trample: .......... 2 dice

Thick hide: ..... –3 hits / attack.

If a Hell Hog is wounded, roll 1 die. On a 1, 2 or 3, it goes Berserk.

The 3 hex Hell Hog has 6 fronts, 2 sides, and 1 rear.



Bainboar: (a.k.a Terminator Pig or Daeodon.)
The largest of the Entelodonts, its skull was 90 cm long and it is over 2 meters tall at the shoulder. Usually found in groups of 1 male and 3 females. It masses close to a tonne and is an active hunter. Unlike the other creatures in this article, it can bite into adjacent hexes.
It is believed that the real Daeodon was a more often a scavenger than a hunter, (it could intimidate the predator away from its catch), but feel free to play the species as a monster that hunts adventurers (it enjoys the challenge and the sport of it).

Bainboar: 4 hex creature
ST 35 to 55
DX 13
IQ 6 or 7

MA 18

Bite: ............. 3d+2 .... (In HTH or into adjacent hexes.)
Trample: ....... 2+2 dice

Thick hide: .... –4 hits / attack.

If a Bainboar is wounded, roll 1 die. On a 1, 2, 3 or 4, it goes Berserk.

The 4 hex bainboar has 6 fronts, 2 sides, and 2 rears.

Attack: Talons 1-1

These large (6' wingspan) black birds are fast, omnivorous, cunning, and cooperative. Their feet, as expected, have nasty talons which they use to hunt or for self defense, but they also have opposable thumbs, which let them grip and deftly handle objects--sometimes to use as weapons. Like ravens, they are wont to pilfer objects that attract their attention, such as jewelry, tools, pot and pans, knives, ropes, etc. Raveners typically found in flocks between 6 and 20, and they communicate with each other through a complex set of vocalizations to coordinate hunting, retreats, to give alarm, and to call for aid. Some even can speak rudimentary languages. Raveners have photographic memory for faces, and will repay kindness shown to them or to punish cruelty (or thoughtlessness) toward them. Large flocks have been known to magnanimously rescue people and animals from predators like wolves, which they seem to hate. However, they've also been known to steal infants and toddlers and eat them. Lone specimens should be regarded with suspicion, as Raveners will shun and expel outlaws from their society.

Gate Lice

Attack: Blood sucking, damage negligible unless infestation is extreme. Egg cluster burst 1d-3 (1 minimum).

Gate Lice are occasional unpleasant surprises to gate travel. Scholars think the 2-inch, bloodsucking isopods must lurk in the unknown space that connects gates, waiting to attach themselves to hapless travelers. Every turn after stepping through an infested gate, roll once for each unattached Gate Louse on a host to determine if it successfully attaches. Female Gate Lice are more dangerous than males; within a few hours of attaching, they burrow under the skin to lay eggs. Each cluster of eggs creates a large unsightly boil on the skin within a few days, which will burst when the host next travels through a gate, releasing the nymph Gate Lice and inflicting 1d-3 (minimum 1) damage.

It is inadvisable to crush or rip attached Gate Lice off the skin; a failed attempt (roll v DX) releases toxic bodily fluids into the bloodstream (Saving roll vs. ST or suffer 1d of fatigue for 24 hours, critical failure results are much worse--possibly fatal). Gate Lice and their egg clusters can be carefully removed by a Master Physicker with surgical implements or killed with contact poison made by a skilled Alchemist. Prophylactic unguents prepared by Alchemists can prevent or lessen infestation, and are sometimes available at bazaars, but the ingredients are rare and expensive.

On the bright side, live Gate Lice are prized by Alchemists for their use as ingredients in their research and products.

How many gate lice are typically found in an infested gate?
How do you determine how they get onto a host (as opposed to attaching once they are on, which you do explain)?
How does one cleanse an infested gate?

Strobe Cats resemble small tigers with blue and orange fur. They are magical creatures that rapidly flicker in and out of our plane of existence, giving a -4 penalty to all attacks to them attempted on them. Their hides are extremely valuable for their ability to insulate against both cold and heat. Their hearts are considered essential ingredients for invisibility potions, and other organs believed to confer virility. They live in deep jungles, where their strange coloration allows them to disappear into the exotic foliage.

There are no typicals. An infested gate could have only a few, or thousands! Ew! The GM simply decides how many are on a character who passes through a gate (or perhaps lets the player roll a number of dice to determine the number of Gate Lice).

A wish could cleanse a gate known to be infested, or perhaps some rare Mnoren artifact.

It seems to me that a Control Gate spell ought to do the trick, since it can make and break connections between gates.

It would seem that something has to do the trick, or else the infestation would spread through most of the known gates. I suppose that preventing anyone from going through an infested gate for a sufficient period of time might work; after all, the lice have to eat.

Think of Gate Lice as like leeches; just because they are in a pond that you swim in does not mean you will get any on you. 50 people could go through a gate and only one or two might come out with lice crawling on them. A really infested gate could be worse, but you'd probably never see 100% of Gate travelers gettign lice.
