You basically need a job where it's normal for people to travel around looking for information, unless you're doing boring higher tech surveillance, which mostly consists of data mining. I wouldn't go with import/export; people may not be looking into whether you're from another dimension, but they will be looking at you to figure out if you're paying all your taxes.

Up through TL 4, TL 5 in some areas, the itinerant merchant is likely a good choice. TL 5-7, a newspaper seems like a good choice. TL 8+, low profile and data mining.

You have to be careful with the newspaper suggestion. Newspaper reporters can't function well unless they enjoy support (or at least tolerance) from the majority culture. Even in our world, today, that's not always the case. Frequently, the moment TPTB figure out that someone is a newspaper reporter, Bad Things happen to that person.
