Default Necromancer: Defense strength

Okay, so I'm wondering a bit on combat in Necromancer.

The Necromancer himself is defined as having a defense strength equal to the overall boulder defense strength for his units.

No one else has a defense strength specifically defined. In general, the so obvious it doesn't need saying answer is that it's the same as that unit's attack strength.

But what gets me is that units have a direct attack strength and an indirect attack strength, and it is possible to combine both direct and indirect attacks in a single combat. At that point, which strength do you use for defense?
