Default [MVDS] Hawker Tomtit

Biplane of the Month Club: September

Hawker Tomtit
Seeking to replace Avro as the RAF's provider of elementary trainers, Hawker developed the Tomtit in 1927. The Tomtit was a conventional biplane of metal construction with a cloth covering, featuring the instructor and pupil in a tandem seating arrangement. Although a handful (25) were acquired by the RAF in 1930, they were quickly replaced by Avro Tutors in 1932. Since Hawker's production facilities were already producing combat planes at maximum capacity, the company was not too shaken by the loss.
Besides the RAF, 2 Tomtits were sold to Canada, 4 to New Zealand, and 5 to private parties.
The plane uses 5.6 gallons of aviation fuel per hour at routine usage. A full load of fuel costs $6.

gSpeed: 181 gAccel: 9 gDecel: 10 gMR: 0.5 gSR: 2
Ground Pressure: High. 1/6 Off-Road Speed.

Design Notes:
Historical wing area was 238 sf. Design aSpeed was 113 mph. Historical values were used for all calculations when available. A 30-gallon fuel tank was purchased for the design; this is an estimate based on historical range and payload. Empty weight was within 9 lbs. of the historical; overall design weight was reduced 4%.
Since 1/6 gSpeed is still 81% of stall speed, this craft can still get airborne in a bumpy field, at the GM's discretion.

Variants:
None, although the privately purchased planes featured power plants ranging from 78 to 148 kW.
