Default Dragon Hoard Idea

I had an interesting thought about dragon hoards - what if dragons are a kind of "lucre spirit" that can directly augment their personal power using nearby wealth?

Since this is very similar in principle to power items, I'd start with "A dragon gets bonus abilities worth CP equal to the value of its entire hoard as a power item."

I went with Power Source (Hoard), and limiting ranks of abilities that can be purchased based on hoard size (using wealth levels, not power items).

I knew an AD&D DM who had abolished experience for money, like most people with any sense. Except for dragons. They got experience for money, as long as they kept the money.

I do something similar.
The Hoard is a Power Item so they have a lot of extra FP.
And additional abilities with a modifier that merges Accessibility (see Anchor if you have a book) and Attracts Threats.

Experience for money was a simple way to reward non-combat solutions to problems as much as combat solutions. XP for kills (and only kills) was one of the worser replacements.

Specifics of implementation could be improved, but the concept wasn't terribad. It breaks down rapidly when you consider goals that aren't actually related to money of course, and going to "experience for overcoming challenges" is just way more flexible with less hacks.

Pretty much. Ditching gold-for-XP without thinking through the consequences led to a lot of bad adventures back in the 1990s and 2000s. Oh goodness were we stupid.

I keep trying to think of ways to get $-for-CP into DFRPG, but can't quite get a good implementation.

Scott Rochat's "What Doesn't Kill Makes Me Stronger" has a rule I convinced Scott to put in that should do this if using that system.

I feel like this is somewhat relevant.
