Re: "Fire Up The Atomic Electro-Magneto-Proton . . . Thingie!"
I've been working on a somewhat realistic 50s scifi setting for quite some time (tentatively titled GURPS the Day After the Earth Stood Still). Trying to combine the gee-whiz of classic scifi with the more modern sensibilities of current scifi.
This pdf may have just the right amount of somewhat that I need... Opens wallet...

I was thinking of getting to do a Skylark of Space EE Doc Smith type game. I seem to recall copper being used as fuel in that universe.

Well, I said that I'd buy a GURPS setting that covered Heinlein's '50s atomic rocket stuff, and I reckon this is as close as I will get for a while.
/me gropes for credit card.

I heart this book excessively much, and it may prove a distraction from some other things I really, really need to be working on. Is the (magnificent) art original, or period stuff?

In Galactic Patrol, they use unspecified "atomic motors" that are quickly replaced by cosmic power screens and (in Gray Lensman) by Medonian total-conversion engines. Triplanetary, of course, has "allotropic iron" engines, but in First Lensman they substitute uranium. They use copper plated with the mysterious "X" metal in Skylark and Skylark Three, though I believe they change to uranium in Skylark of Valeron. See there, you just forced me to reread Skylark of Valeron. </pedantry> |
