changing weapons in play

If I decide not to use a spear in play and change for a different weapon, are my options: 1. sell spear 2. Drop it 3. or trade it

You missed a few. The options I can think of immediately are:

1. Put the spear in your pack by turning it sideways (remember you can only have two packed Items).
2. Discard the spear to power a Class ability, such as the Thief's Search ability.
3. Sell spear for a level (provided you have enough other Items or Gold to make 1000 Gold Pieces worth).
4. Drop the spear.
5. Trade the spear to somebody who is willing to take it.
6. Make a Deal in a room that allows you to somehow trade Items for something else (this one is situational, of course).

It's necessary to fine tune the above: The player you trade with must have his character in the same room as you, or an adjacent room to the one you are in, and must not be in combat. Trading can be done at any time, even if it's not on your turn, so whether another player is in combat or not does matter.
