It dates to AD&D 1E, but not the MM (1977), tho' it is used in Moldvay's 1981 Basic Set so some point between 1977 and 1981 it was introduced.

Ah. That's when I stopped playing D&D. It just irritated me that I had spent time playing characters and gotten them up a few levels, and then the rules had changed and they weren't valid any more.
