Default [IW] Ability needed: Touch item - tell what world it's from

Hi guys

I am looking for an ability that allowed one to touch an item and then know which world it came from. Is there such an ability to be found somewhere?

I was searching my library but wasn't able to find anything. If there isn't such a power, how would you build it?

Cheers

I think the advantage you're looking for is Psychometry (B78, P69)

Don't know if anything like this has been published, but I'd say Detect (Outtime Artifacts; Analyzing +100%; Melee C -30%) would do it. With the fact that it only reveals the origin of a given outtime artifact, I think Rare would be appropriate, for [8.5], round up to [9] (add a [1] UB if you want it to be an even [10]). If you want it to be able to reliably confirm an object is from the same timeline as you are currently in, adding Cosmic +50% (boosting cost from [8.5] to [11]) should be able to tell you if you fail the Detect roll (as normally the GM makes the roll, you can't be certain if an item isn't registering as outtime because it's actually native or because you just failed your roll). Alternatively, just hold your hand on it for a few seconds and see if it ever registers; if not, it's probably native (or protected).

Analyzing should be sufficient to tell you roughly what timeline it's from (probably including the timeline's quantum level), but if it's not one you're familiar with that doesn't help a lot (although you can determine which baubles are from that specific timeline). A successful IQ roll will give you the quantum coordinates (sufficient that any conveyor, Jumper, etc with the ability to go there can follow your directions).

Not really. Psychometery tell you about an object' past, not its world-line. If a character already had Psychometery I might allow it to perform that function, but I wouldn't use it as the base for someone who can only detect which world-line.

I would personally just use detect (outtime objects, Rare, Melee-C -30%) [4]. An argument can be made that it should be Occasional, raising the cost to [7].

EDIT: Ninja'd! Discussion of the proper modifiers coming later!

Perfect, thanks for the suggestions...

I'll opt for rare, makes most sense for me.

Cheers!

Depending on what other powers the character had, I'd probably let this go as a Power Perk. So, say the PC has Jumper or something like that, one point more seems reasonable for a perk that lets them take five minutes to divine what world an item is from.
