Default Big Joe and Blinders

A two parter:

1) If I put the Blinders on Big Joe, can I ignore the running away restriction by declaring him a hireling, since any steed enhancers would no longer work on him? I’m pretty confident that the text, like the bonus, would no longer apply.

2) If part 1 is true, would I have to declare him a hireling before I try to run away, or can I change his type and effectively “jump off his back” during the run away phase?

You can't declare Big Joe a Hireling once he has a Steed Enhancer, because Steed Enhancers may only be played on Steeds.

Sorry, but I thought it had been previously ruled that steed or item enhancers remain attached to steeds or items that have changed state (Big Joe or Horse Shoes), but will have no effect while the “attachee” isn’t the right type. Is this not the case?

Find me the cite and I'll take a look.

Sorry, I should have done my research before posting...

It is in the De-Ranged FAQ:
Q. If I am using Horse Shoes as a Steed and it has a Steed Enhancer on it, what happens if I declare that Horse Shoes is now Footgear?
A. The Steed Enhancer remains on Horse Shoes, but they do not add to its bonus as long as you are using them as Footgear.

(I am assuming that it is ok to quote from the FAQs, since they are publicly viewable. Sorry if this is not true.)

I would guess that this would apply in general: an enhancer stays attached but has no effect while attached to a card of the “wrong” type.

The question remains, however, as to whether one can change Big Joe into a hireling during the Run Away phase. What can/can’t be done while one is running away, and what can be done to someone while they are running away?

Also, sorry for apologizing so much, but I *am* Canadian.
