I can understand that damage rating is equal to the number of times the average damage divides by 3.5, but what determines when I add +x and -y?

So, if my damage is 5d+5, then my average damage is going to be (5*3.5)+5 - or 22.5. If my damage is 3d-2, then my average is going to be (3*3.5)-2, or 8.5. Hope that helps. __________________ M2: Everything is true. GP: Even false things? M2: Even false things are true. GP: How can that be? M2: I don't know man, I didn't do it.

Not really, what determines that 8.5 to not be 2d6+1 or 2d+2 (average 7, average 8)?

Rounding would be according to the preference of the person doing the math.

Out of curiosity, why do you ask? I can't think of any published GURPS work which talks about average damage rather than dice.

Damage calculations. It also seems to come up with special ammunitions.

Yes, there are damage multipliers that don't work well with the d system.

Are you maybe looking for the Optional Rule: Modifying Dice + Adds box on B269? If you're adding large amounts, it allows you to convert a +4 to 1d, a +7 to 2d. Or are you trying to go the the other way? You might want to look at Partial Dice for Innate Attack, B62.
