Both are in a tradition established by Robert Heinlein's "Magic, Inc.", as Anderson explicitly acknowledged in the dedication to Operation Chaos. I believe it's the prototype of the genre.

That was one of the options I considered in GURPS Thaumatology: Urban Magics. There's also "create a strip of no-mana circling a place you want to defend," which shuts down a lot of magical attacks as they cross it, but doesn't stop using magic inside.

The astronauts of Gurps: Technomancer, I think they called them Astromancers;-) would be able to travel around the solar system fairly well with Gurps Magic. ExtraSolar travel would take longer. Extraplanetary colonies would be more common.
