I instantly thought of that book when I read the title of the post.

The artists in the book had a large number of limitations. For one thing there were two parts to the process: painting and pulling what you wanted from the painting into the real world.

Also, the more thought you put into the painting, the more real the ally was.

In the book, pencil drawings were used, but primarily for throw away thugs.

They didn't have to understand how what they drew worked. If they drew an SF flying saucer, it flew.

Also the style of your art effected the outcome. If you were methodical, then you guns could be made to use standard interchangeable parts, but if you weren't, they each used their own sized ammo.

And what you were thinking when you drew the object/ally into the world helped to shape it.

And the final fight scene was fabulous. Mayhem at an SF con.
