If I recall correctly, our Saxon ancestors* divided humanity (mann) into waepanmann (those that bear arms - males) and wofemann (those that weave - females) so it would certainly seem to be a valid cultural assumption. There have been plenty of tribal societies where any (free) male is expected to bear arms. And a good few post tribal ones as well. Actual warriors may be a separate caste or subset, but all men may well be expected to take part in conflict if required.

In some tribal societies women can cross no mans land with impunity. That gives them an extra specialization as they provide a diplomat class.

Women as exempt non-combatant has been pretty common historically, but has also tended to clash with the women as property meme - I would suggest that in most of Europe up until the Great War (and perhaps even then) a woman with sufficient social status not to be casually molested could move around a conflict area with something close to impunity.

Probably during the Great War too. Taking the risk of burning to many bridges is something mainly revolutionaries do and not all of those. The main risk would have been "to whom it may concern" fire, and if there was any reason for her to move beyond the front line a truce would have been called to prevent that. Entertainers and nurses, etc must take their chances, but deliberately firing on them was not a characteristic then and is not a normal characteristic in all wars to this day, though the promulgation of terrorism, counterinsurgency, operations-other-than, etc as opposed to traditional war has changed that somewhat. Still the principle remains that if you make your enemy to angry you may not be able to end the war when you want.

What society has ever learned that fact for more than five minutes though?
Everyone demands revenge post-war. It's the rarity for a culture not to exact excessive consequences afterwards.

Enough societies for there to be a such thing as peace even if it is never an absolute.
