Space scenario questions
Hi folks,
I would like to get to know some space scenarios. I heard of Dune, Star Wars/Trek and Traveller. But what other universes are out there? My other Space thread, questioning about the artwork of Gurps Space book http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=46180. Thanksalot, Knartz |

Re: Space scenario questions
Well, for space opera settings, you have Babylon 5 and Stargate SG1 (with its spinoffs). On the more gritty end, you have Firefly and the re-vamped Battlestar Galactica.
As for RPG Space settings, you have Blue Planet, Star Frontiers, and my favorite, 2300 AD, plus SJGames' own setting, the elegant Transhuman Space. SJGames also did a book based on David Brin's Uplift series of science fiction novels.

Re: Space scenario questions
Another good one is Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers novel. The movie's setting could also make for a good campaign. GURPS Biotech has the interesting "Draconis" setting in the back. Bungie's Halo or Marathon series can be interesting, albeit a bit focused. Blizzard's Starcraft is rife with situations where PCs could thrive. Warhammer 40,000 might be good (I've never played it, but I've heard there's a good deal of story info out there). Xenosaga would probably be pretty awesome. If you're into webcomics, Schlock Mercenary would be a great setting.
Honestly, there's a massive number of space settings out there. Some of them are more conducive to adventuring than others, but just about all of them would work under GURPS rules.

Re: Space scenario questions
My GM has a group of books for a game called "Justifyers."
In a nutshell, society has advanced and there are gene spliced Chimera (anthropomorphic animals.) Interstellar Travel is via stargates but the catch is stargates are only one way an they take six months to build. The point of plot is that the powers that be sponsor "Justifyer" teams which are gated to a new world with the mission to build and gate . . . and survive. If they finish the gate and port back, then they have justified the planet for colonization . . .

Re: Space scenario questions
As far as books go, you could try stuff from Vernor Vinge. "A Deepness in the Sky" for an STL ramscoop, humans only, type setting, or "A Fire Upon the Deep" for an FTL, lots of aliens, various Singularity spawned deity level beings, etc.
You could go for the retro feel of the Lensmen series by E.E. "Doc" Smith, there's already a GURPS setting for that, in fact: Tales of the Solar Patrol. Heinlein had several possible settings. Others have mentioned Starship Troopers, but I think others might be better suited for general roleplaying. The setting he described in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Rolling Stones, Red Planet, (and possibly Stranger in a Strange Land, his Martians are the same anyway) is a fairly plausible STL single solar system setting with some nice prebuilt backstory. I'll second the people who mentioned Firefly, excellent series and practically designed for roleplaying. |

Ringworld by Larry Niven. Chaosium even did a boxed game for it.
