Default When in Rome...

Who doesn't love a good papal election? From the heights of Heaven to the depths of Hell, all the major players are sending their best agents to make sure it's fixed right rather than wrong (i.e., how someone else is planning to fix it.) You're not one of their best agents, though. Technically, you're not anyone's agent at all, thank you very much; you and your buddies are scum-sucking Renegades, free just like God hadn't intended. And you're in town anyway because...

...the minders of the Vatican archives have other things on their mind, and you're going to sell that Relic to the highest bidder.

...that angel said Lawrence would Redeem you if you got absolution from the current Pope, and this is your last chance.

...your old lover is one of the best agents, and you want to do anything you can to screw him over.

...you're a sedevacanist Habbalah, and you're certain that the College of Cardinals would see the light if you could just sit them down in a room (duct tape may or may not be necessary) and have them listen.

...you need to get back into Kobal's good graces, and if this doesn't present an opportunity for that, nothing will.

...one of the longer-shot papabiles has summoned and bound you; congratulations, you're now his campaign committee.

...a very long time ago, before losing all those Forces and Asmodeus' favor and spending those untold centuries in Limbo, you were the Demon of Papal Elections. You still are, I suppose, but the modern world doesn't know much about you, and the feeling is mutual. You don't even remember very much about yourself. But somehow you know that this is where you're supposed to be...

...if you're gonna go, you're gonna go with a bang.

You know, asking Lucifer for the Word of sedevacanism might just work. And it has a Word-Force! See, it's pretty and shiny!

Papal elections didn't start until 1061 and Papal Conclaves didn't start until 1276,

Papal elections existed before 1061 but they were basically a show vote; usually the Holy Roman Emperor (or sometimes the existing Pope) would say who he wanted and the electors would ratify the choice to make it canonically legal. So The Game might have been able to find Word-material there in earlier centuries -- in fact, a "going through the motions" to satisfy the form of canon law while betraying the intent would be very Game-like.

The 1059 synod that began reforming the process, curiously enough, was called In nomine Domini.

The Word of Sedevacantism isn't held by any demon. However, a few demons do have its Word Attunement, which is the ability to grant other demons (whom the grantor believes to be actual sedevacantists) one of the two Rites of Sedevacantism, which are to receive a sacrament from a priest in the proper apostolic succession, or to loudly protest against a pretender priest. The grant requires 10 Essence, and allows access to ambient Essence of the Word in the Symphony.

No one is entirely sure who the first holder of such an Attunement was.
