Default Newbie--a few questions

Hi, all. New to playing Munchkin Quest, and I need some help figuring out a few things. I have been looking through the manual and forums but haven't got this straight yet--I do apologize if this is answered somewhere else, but I did look. ^_^

So, here we are--a few questions:

1. What is the difference between normal, locked, and hidden doors other than the increased movement cost? Is there anything special munchkins have to do to get through locked/hidden doors? Or do those just apply to monsters, as things that most can't get through but some might be able to use?

2. Cards in play: Are cards "in play" always set before you face up? I'm assuming so from the picture, but wasn't sure if that was just supposed to be for wearables and weapons, or if that would include "belt" items like potions and scrolls.

3. DxM Cards: Do DxM cards (especially "usable once only" cards) have to be held in your "hand" until used, or can they be put "in play" but without being "used" to get them out of your hand like items? If they can be put in play, do they go in front of you face up? We assumed, since DxM weren't "items," they couldn't go "in play" on your belt or anything like that, so they had to reside in your hand until used (aside from obvious exceptions like races and classes). Is that right?

Sorry if these are some stupid questions. :-P I answered one for myself (about searching) by re-reading a section I must have just read too quickly before, so I'm not a total idiot! ^_^

Munchkin Quest is hilarious fun, btw.

  1. The main difference is, as you say, the amount of Move it takes to go through them. Certain Classes and Races get to ignore those values. And Monsters can't generally go through Hidden and Locked doors.
  2. A card in play must be face up.
  3. The only cards that can be in play are Items, Races, Classes and cards that say they can be in play, so even if a DxM says it's usable once only, it can't be kept in play unless it also say so.

Thanks--that's a great help.

One more question: I know you can drop items you no longer want to carry at any time except during combat. Does that mean that if you entered a room that, for instance, caused you damage if you had the flight power, you could avoid the damage by dropping the item that was giving you the flight power? Or is it too late once you've entered the room?

Once you've entered the room, its rules are in effect. However, the issue is this: If it's an immediate, one-time effect, it happens immediately and ditching the card that initiates the effect won't help you. If it's a continuing effect (like reducing the number of combat dice you have), if you drop or discard the appropriate card, the effect will go away.

When you run of bases for the monsters what do you do with the monsters you draw? I know you aren't supposed to use bases that we don't have players for.

When you run out of bases, you are expected to discard the highest level monster in the dungeon and replace it with the new monster using that base.
It actually is in the rules but I don't have a chance to go through the rulebook to find the reference.

Starting at the bottom of page 6:

Even if there are no bases available, you must still roll the Monster Die to see if a player gets a DxM. (The same is true for Monster Movement when there are no monsters on the board, BTW.)
