Default Making the leap to GURPS

I've decided to make the leap:
https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/...ONp1f7ADG2zVWo

No more Man to Man for me, I'm making the leap to the GURPS Basic Set! I wasn't sure whether to do it, but with the $5 gift certificate they're offering for people who "make the leap" and upgrade, I figured I'd go ahead.

Anyone wanna play?

(Ah, nostalgia...I couldn't resist this first edition GURPS Basic Set when it came up on eBay. The box is just OK, but the contents are shiny and new-looking, right down to the flyers, envelope, and cardstock heroes (plus a copy of 1e GURPS Fantasy!) Oh, how I remember sitting on the floor at my girlfriend's house after I bought my 1e GURPS Basic Set, reading the intro while she watched Days of Our Lives. What's your first GURPS memory?)

I started with 3e. I was browsing Barnes and Nobles or Waldenbooks and at the time had just gotten over running a lot of homebrew systems (which mostly resembled the one-page systems that you see around today) and here was a game that looked liked it could be all of those things that I needed. I think I saved up and came back and bought it. I do remember reading it straight through in one night though!

I also started with 3e. My GM bought it and then insisted it was better than D&D and we were switching systems. Turns out, he was right.

Eventually switched to 4e, a bit before the time I joined this forum.

I had that box set, too, but at the time I wasn’t ready for GURPS. I think I must have sold it on because my predominant memory of starting to play was with the 3e book.

The high school friend of mine who had taught a bunch of us to play AD&D, and been our GM for years, introduced us to GURPS 2e.

I read the rules, and my first character came walking out of my mind, almost fully formed.

I started with First Edition but may have run my first game with Second, dont recall. I was with a group playing mostly D&D, Traveler and Champions out of a game store that later moved to our homes.

The appeal to the group was ...
  • Hit Locations and more tactical combat choices
  • Spells as Skills instead of Cast and Forget, some of us liked the style change
  • variety in spells, including cantrip like effects
  • The Advantage/Disadvantage system

Started with 3E, pre-Compendiums. I had bought Horseclans when it came out, but did not get into the system until later.

I didn't get put into the system until much later, but now I can quote RAW when I am not giving up when other men would. :)
